Bethany and Victor, then green belts, practice with the Bo staff back in 2023. All these years later, they are still both actively training every week! Both went on to earn their Black Belts in 2024. This year, Victor went one step further, earning his Okinawan rank and linage. Bethany will be testing for her Okinawan rank and lineage in 2027! Parents - you can do this!

KARATE IS NOT JUST FOR KIDS
In the mid-1990’s, after the evolution of the Ninja Turtle Franchise, Martial Arts became very popular for children. Nowadays, most parents think of Karate as something that their kids do. Yet, the association to children is very new. Even when I began training in the early 1980’s, there were almost no children training. In the dojo I trained at, there were a few kids that came and went through the years - but…VERY FEW. It was almost entirely adults.
When I opened training to parents in 2021, even I could not have imagined how successful the program would become. Since then, a significant number of our adults and parents have earned their black belts. Several have gone even further, earning their place within the Okinawan lineage; a rare distinction for American karate practitioners.
FAR MORE THAN A “FITNESS” CLASS
Our adult students have also taken their training well beyond the walls of our Bexley dojo. In August 2026, we traveled with a group of adults and select teenage students to Los Angeles for a special training seminar. Next month, an even larger group of adult students, parents, and teenagers will travel to Okinawa, Japan, to train directly with the masters. If you have ever watched The Karate Kid and imagined what it would be like to experience that kind of journey, this is the real thing!
YOU CAN FIT IT INTO YOUR SCHEDULE
As a parent myself, I know firsthand how exhausting parenting can be and how quickly work, family, and responsibilities can consume every available hour. That is why I have made our adult introductory program as manageable as possible. We ask for only one class per week, with a 75% attendance goal during the five-month introductory period. The complete schedule and program details will be included on the registration page.
WE OPEN THE PROGRAM ONCE PER YEAR - WITH VERY LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE
We had 6 Students enroll last week. We only have our final TWO spaces remaining in our 2027 adult beginner class. If you have been on the fence about “possibly” trying it out, I encourage you to join us in January. Give yourself the opportunity to discover firsthand how karate can change your life.
WE DO NOT OPEN THIS CLASS TO THE PUBLIC
Due to our status as an Okinawan approved Dojo, every single week, I receive calls from adult karate practitioners; inquiring about training at our center. Every single time, I say no. Why? I don’t know them. It’s that simple. My top priority will ALWAYS be protecting the students (especially the kids) who are already enrolled and, as such, we only enroll parents of current students OR an adult who has a direct referral from a parent or current adult student.
WHY WE REQUIRE A 5 MONTH COMMITMENT TO BEGIN
The adult program is smaller, more intense and it moves MUCH faster than a child’s program. We also dedicate a specific class time, mat space, and an instructing team, to get everyone started off on the right foot. As such, we do require an original commitment of 5 months (Jan - May) to begin. After that, the new adults blend in with the other adult students and their training commitment becomes month to month. (Like the children)

I want to share the photo below was taken at our August 2026 Los Angeles training seminar. If you enlarge it and look closely, you will notice that the participants are ALL adults; not children. You would not be alone. All over the world, adults practice karate to challenge themselves, preserve tradition, remain active, and keep their bodies moving.
